Patterntology Gallery

Patterntology Gallery
The Gallery
Patterntology Gallery is the Second Life art gallery of, me, artist and designer Quota Soon. Although my aim is to have monthly shows, most shows stay up a month or two while my schedule permits me to create new work. Each show has an opening on the Saturday it is put up. Patterntology is part of the group Meatspace and adjoined to Meatspace Lounge, home of bi-weekly concerts by Kyle Beltran. We are located on the beautiful Isle of Puli featuring Asian themed architecture, and a shoreline environment that mimics the northern California coast.

The Artist

Quota Soon is Tom Baumgartner.
I've been an artist since I can remember. I have a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and have been creating and showing my oil paintings and digital work for 20yrs. I reside in Tucson, Arizona where I have been involved in a community gallery, as an artist, on their board of directors and as a curator. Now I have my own gallery!

Much of the work in my career has been abstract. Large canvases I stretch myself and use a glazing technique with a build up of varnishes that creates a glowing effect. In recent years, my focus has aimed towards realism. In a way, exploring the interior abstract vocabulary brought me to the exterior world. There is also a need to achieve a mastery of light via oil painting techniques. Creating a quality object is important to me in life now, not just the emotive expression.

For years I've had a debate about how digital work relates to my art. Something I can't ignore because I hone these skills everyday as an art director at a Tucson PR firm. The process is different. The tools are different. Digital work calls out for photo manipulation. 'Characters' have started to interest me, and I am arriving at a consistant form of collage. The material I use are from photos I take myself, vector work I create myself, and open source photos I collect from the web. I'm excited by this new genre!

The Work:

Oil Paintings
I bobble back and forth between oil painting and digital work. Paintings I've done in the last couple years are here (click for larger):

Oil Paintings

These pieces are 12" x 12" on a 2" thick wooden panel I have made by a furniture maker. They are a quality presentation that doesn't need framing. I spend an average of 25hrs per piece and they go for $300. Email if interested.

Digital Artwork

Digital work has to be printed. All of my digital work is hi rez. I work in a file 24" x 48" at 150dpi. This is high quality for this large. All of my work can be ordered in smaller sizes. In the past, for gallery shows, I will have them printed on acrylic and mounted in a light box I wire myself. It is a stunning presentation.
